Tekken has officially arrived on the mobile gaming scene! Whether you are a diehard fan of the franchise or lived your entire life under a rock this is a game worth checking out.
I was skeptical about how much I would enjoy this game but after a few solid hours I can say with confidence that this is a mobile port done right. The controls are simple, it’s quick to get the hang of but also ramps up in difficulty fairly quickly. There are no intrusive ads but the pay-to-win aspect is reasonable and not unbalanced. It also looks just great. When I play it on my phone I don’t feel like I’m playing a mobile game, I feel like I’m back in the day playing Tekken 3 on my old PS1. Ah nostalgia.
One of the great things about this game is that everything you can buy with real money you can also unlock within the game. This includes new characters, combos, power ups and healing items. And the game gives you a lot of opportunities to unlock these items through its three starting game modes of Story, Dojo and Live Events with the soon to be released Local Vs. Story mode is cheesy but progressively introduces the characters while ramping up with difficulty at a good pace for a beginner. In Dojo mode you take battle other players online and Live Events are constantly changing challenges that give you lots of great prizes. You even get some gear just for logging in every day.
The controls are probably the weakest part of the game but they aren’t necessarily bad, just more limited by the mobile environment. Instead of linking together moves with different button combinations you use Waza (yes, Waza) Cards which when combined in different ways can create some awesome combos. It can take a little getting used to at first but after some initial growing pains it’s easy to understand and you’ll be kicking butt in no time.
It’s easy to get lost in the graphics which are about as good as it gets for a mobile game and really show how far the mobile gaming scene has come since Snake. Between the different game modes, ensemble of characters and unlockable moves and combinations this is a solid game with longevity to keep it atop the charts.
